Anyone know what this is?

This beastie nearly carried off one of my children.
Found in an urban street it was about 40mm long and you could hear its wings flapping against the wind breaker which it was on, sounding like a moth.
I've never seen one of these in my life before.... it flew off after I took a few pictures.

Yes, its a Greater Horntail Wasp although technically it is a type of sawfly, despite the name. Saw flies being part of the ants, bees and wasps family and nothing to do with flies - confusing isn't it.
