Heres the thing . If the ad had been left to view by those who wanted to purchase said item , it would have raised considerably less interest than it has by flagging it up .
530 plus views , does anyone here think the ad would have got that many if the op had not posted . Almost certainly not !

There seem to be a number of contributors on this topic who don't seem willing or able to make a distinction between a commercial advert and a commercial individual.
Here are a selection of ads that none of you objected too, perhaps because the word "commercial" didn't appear. I don't particularly object to any of these ads. I do object to discrimination. Every single one is clearly proposing a commercial transaction i.e. the "goods" have been produced with a sale in mind. Why did nobody raise any objections I'd like to know? Not their main business? So what? Some of these have more bees than bees4u in any case.

Perhaps you have answered your own question there Chris. For whatever reason - no one objected. On this ocasion people did. Straw that broke the camels back or attention drawn to it by others? Who knows. However the decision has been made: Judgement for the plaintive lol. Seller beware.....The precedent has now been set.

...

Chris, I think one useful distinction, helpful in identifying a 'commercial advert', is between those who are forum members and incidentally have something to sell, and those who give the impression of having joined principally to promote their business.
Another useful distinction is between those who appear to be abusing the forum and those helping it.
In this case some skilful trolling has kept the pot boiling, with more publicity for the troll's business.

I trust that spam4u will shortly be added to the censored lists and be retrospectively replaced throughout the forum with something more unhelpful and commercially unrewarding.

I agree with all the above. So let's carry on being honest about the real rules, as opposed to the published ones.

Thanks Chris B for taking the trouble to point all this out. Jean

Somewhat difficult thread in many ways, I guess in part because there is no provision for the members to place their small ads.

Other places often have just such a provision, a section or thread for small ads.

Businesses (as distinct from hobbyists) overtly offering their commercial products for sale should be compelled to either pay a fee to post, and that to be in a dedicated format somewhere, or just plain deleted. Would never dream of offering the items I do on here other than a passing reference in a thread to which it would be relevant. If I advertise I expect to pay.

Small scale beekeepers with a few spare nucs, or a few extra queens or a couple of buckets of spare honey? No problem, it is inoffensive and just part of normal conversation in our community. Small ads section for such offers would fix it.

I don't see a problem with advertising as long as it's done in the right section. Perhaps you could charge a percentage of each sale to go towards the forum, so the commerical beekeepers pay proportionally more than 'hobby' ones.

While you lot are having a scrap.

Mark when will you be adding 2012 nucs for sale please as I want to start taking orders.

Thanks in advance.

There are currently (when I just looked a couple miutes ago) 2,635 items listed on epay for 'beekeeping'.

If commercial sellers are simply allowed to adverise their epay wares on the forum, just think how long it will take for a lot of those on epay to realise this is a free area to draw attention to their 2,365 items.
You could be wrong about his. The BBKA forum has a buy and sell section and it is rarely used. On my own forum we also have a section for buy/sell and when I last looked there wasn't a single item listed.

Taking orders clearly indicates planned commercial activity.

Please note that for 2011 all posters in the "Nucs for sale" section must be forum supporters.

This is due to the number of sellers over the last 2 years who have posted for sale ads and only return to update threads without helping answer forum users questions or taking part in the forum.

To donate to the server/software costs please click here.

As far as i am aware, that does not apply to commercial sellers.

The click here does not seem to be working, can you please get your act together (admin), if that's your real name.....lol

I don't see the problem, if you have something for sale put it in the ' equip for sale ' section, if an ad appears anywhere else in the forum, admin could politely point them in the direction of the forum rules and the relevant section the first time, second time turf them off. Go and sell your stuff elsewhere, this forum is for questions and answers to beekeeping problems and issues related to beekeeping. How difficult is that to understand?
