Tesco honey

Interesting (but not unexpected and wholly overdue) article in the Sunday Times today (page 8 main section) headline "Tesco honey 'bulked out with sugar'"...….

"Tesco's own brand honey under investigation by the National Food Crime Unit"...."adulterated with syrups made with sugar"....454g jar of own brand set honey costs £1.35" (lol or cry)… "wide spread issue with adulteration of honey" …. "Honey is one of the most adulterated types of food" .

"Tesco said 'Tesco brand honey is 100% pure, natural and can be directly traced back to the beekeeper". Oh yeah? tomorrow off down to the local Tesco, buy a £1.35 jar and then write to Tesco asking for the name of the beekeeper. Don't bet on getting a reply!. Rowse said………………... wait for it!:

"NMR was unreliable but traditional analyses showed its products were pure honey"...…..

So watch this space. Tesco is the name of the day, but lining up behind Ssbrys, Mrrsons, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.:icon_204-2::icon_204-2::icon_204-2::icon_204-2::icon_204-2:

Thank you for sharing, i hope it doesn't tar us all with the same brush, and encourages people to buy local :)

After watching the documentary 'Rotten' on Netflix I am not surprised that sugar syrup is being mixed in with the Tesco honey; every time a test is developed to check the authenticity of honey, the fraudsters will find a way round it. I hope there is a very large investigation into the issue.

On the plus side I think it will generate interest in our home produced UK honey. When we do farmers market we always have our honey out for taste tests, people walking through the market often say they don't like honey but on being persuaded to taste it can't believe the flavour and end up buying a jar. If people think honey tastes like the stuff you can buy for £1.35 I'm not surprised they don't like it. Incidentally MIL saw a jar of Manuka for £3 yesterday!!!!!!!

Incidentally the second series of 'Rotten' was just as good as the first, but you will never look at a bar of chocolate or an avocado the same way again.

Any chance you could persuade her to buy a jar and send it to TS?
If every UK supermarket honey was sent by the public to TS (as with the Tesco complaint) it would switch a giant floodlight on the issue.

That's a Very good idea..

I think I may follow your suggestion...
