Well done PH. My OH runs on Dartmoor regularly and has OS Locate on her phone but grid refs are still beyond her, this may help.

Something else that may save a life, and that I only found out about this week, is the 112 emergency call number. Call it in any of the 28 EU states, and you'll be put through to an English speaking (if calling from a UK mobile) emergency centre.
What will happen after 31/10, I cannot say. Hopefully it will be continued in the event of a deal.

My son in law had to be rescued from a forest after a very serious mountain bike accident. He is very lucky to have a supportive employer as he has been off work for 18 months and is going to be permanently disabled.

I watched some mountain bikers setting off at 11pm with head torches up a mountain this summer and thought if only you knew....

Stan used to be in Mountain Rescue and that sort of location assistance would have been spot on. The things they had to deal with in The Lakes. From tourists going up mountains in sandals to hang gliders ploughing into hillsides. Horrid.

I've been using What3words as a location indicator for quite some time. It's great for providing someone else with an accurate location and them being able to navigate to it, but it can lack a bit in some emergency emergency situations as you need the time to activate the app to find where you are and then call the police/rescue with the three words.

An app I use for emergency location that doesn't require you to look up where you are is called "Save Our Soul" SOS. In an emergency situation you get several options to depress, eg call police /ambulance etc which it does automatically and should you be incapacitated (heart attack) and unable to speak as long as you can activate it on your phone (its always an active app) it will automatically send your location to them. Other options are sirens, photos, whistles, panic buttons etc. Once activated you have 15 seconds to deactivate an emergency call should you activate it by mistake.

These 2 apps will help in just about any emergency situation except in an area where there is no mobile phone coverage ....which covers about 70% of my fishing "beats".

Fishing has quite a high injury rate with several deaths each year. Mainly slips and drowning while wading or falling in, washed away by large waves etc. Not as high as base jumping but up there.

The What3words app? I don't think so. It doesn't track you - unlike Google maps which has a timeline option, but which you can turn off.

And here’s me thinking “ Gone Fishing” meant just that

It can mean "Gone"....in the late sense

Its back to tell people where you have gone and when you expect to get back for many of the smaller dales in the North Yorks moors.

There will be something similar out there for an iphone. SOS isn't the only emergency app out there. I tried a few before settling on w3w and sos.
