All my nucs have access to a small tub of fondant ontop of the feeder hole. Early on in the nucs buildup they are most at risk of starvation if weather turns bad or your inspections are delayed. No risk with over feeding when using fondant this time of year.

I have nursed my hives 54 years without fondant and without starvation risk.

Nuc does not have more risk for starvation than other hives. Bigger risk is that it becomes too full.

I make tens of nucs every year, and I do not feed them. I put into nucs a food frame. And the rest bees pick from nature.


That "aquarium feeding model" of hives is a real disaster to beginners' beekeeping. The hive will be filled with sugar, and them it swarms.
. It same in USA. In pictures hives have all the time feeding bottles in entrance.

Yet another question I,am afraid. Nuc will arrive this evening and weather for next few days is much cooler and wet. So as I will have an empty super on top of the brood box is it worth putting some insulation in,just for a few days. Just trying to make sure I get everything ready and correct.

You want need a super on yet and you can leave insulation board under the roof on all year, if it's a strong nuc it will expand in no time this time of year

IT will not expand overnight.

IT surely has enough food, and does not need anything at once..

You put it in final place and open the entrance.


If it does not have insulation over inner cover, it is very good to add.

no need for a super on a newly hived nuc - as it's going to be wet the next few days, can't you just leave the bees in the nuc for a few days in the intended final position?
