    Woodpeckers

I had to sort out some damage from woodpeckers around the middle of last month. It's not the first time colonies have been pestered in early Autumn although my bees are now in an entirely different location.

    Guarding at bait hive entrance.

For the last 5 years I've had a bait hive set up in my garden about 10 feet from my favourite armchair. Each year there has been some considerable bee activity followed by the arrival of swarms. This activity has included guarding at the entrance. At times, new arrivals have been allowed...

    Pride before the fall!

Not wanting to be confrontational, just looking for information: does anyone have any information on how long a queen can survive without her attendants?

    South Wales theft

Yes Russel, very close to that one. As regards the MO of the theif, the site is pretty inaccessible involving climbing through some rough scrub on a steep hill. My guess is that, having scoped the site, they knew enough to bring a nuc along for ease of carriage. The puzzle being that they not...

    South Wales theft

Stolen from apiary near Cardiff/ Taff's Well: a colony on 5 DN4 frames and a Thorne's 4" national roof. Just the frames, roof and bees stolen nothing marked except queen in yellow.

    Feeding solution?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. To be honest, I lost patience trying unsuccessfully to contact the vendor by 'phone last year. However, thanks to Peteinwilts for sharing his idea: "At the moment I just use a small handfull of dead grass in the cone, which works well." I tried...

    Feeding solution?

Hello everybody, I'm looking for some opinions. Last season I bought some Maisemore's Jumbo green feeders. Unfortunately, this resulted in the deaths of many bees - the cone areas on all the feeders were actually packed with corpses. This season, I thought I had resolved the problem by...

    Bee escapes

I used these last year (large size as in the photo) Found them to be effective and fast. Cleared all but a few stragglers in about half an hour. I also left a colony with one on overnight to see if the bees would go back into the super. After twelve hours there were only about half a dozen bees...

    Swarm trap entrance

Yes. I purchased one of these thinking what a good idea. I followed the supplied instructions to the letter on several different colonies over the course of a couple of seasons. It may have been my faulty use of the item but I never got it to work as intended. It is currently sat in my shed.

    South Wales: attempted theft

An excerpt from email of Cardiff and Vale BKA " XXXX has reported an attempted theft of a bee hive from a site in Taffs Well. ........ The thief attempted to put the hive with bees into a van. He dropped the hive, presumably too heavy or cumbersome and drove off in his van when some one...

    Growing Nuc. How to proceed?

Hello Rab, and thanks for your reply. With regards to migrating the bees, sorry if I've confused you. I had in mind something in the order of a Bailey comb change. So the detailed description I was looking for would include the mechanics of marrying a five frame nuc box and a 14x12 brood...
