greywolf,

There are a lot on the forum who would recommend a well balanced nucleus of local bees where the queen is the mother of all the brood (and some of the foragers too, preferably).

They are unfortunately fewer and further between, as well as tending to be from, shall we say, much 'smaller' suppliers - or a lot more expensive from the bigger outfits.

You pays your money....... as they say.

Regards, RAB

I like Mike too. He is honest, he works bloody hard and he is looking for a buyer for a damn good business.

He is progressing his business while he looks for a buyer which alone says a lot.

He sold me some excellent nucs, and the packages, a new and very exciting experience for me, took off like rockets.

I found him honest, and I say it like it is.

If you want a smoothie, he is not your man, but neither am I. He knows the value of a penny, asked in the Mway services for a mug of hot water and had his own tea bag LOL

It's worth going to see Mike for the experience. He's entertaining, sometimes blunt, full of knowledge and always a glint in the eye.

When I sell a nuc it has, a queen which is mother to all, four frames of brood at a minimum and all flying bees hatched to the present queen.

Simple really, and oh yes over wintered. So Proven. I take the winter hit not the buyer.

"and oh yes over wintered"
some would say second year queens would be more prone to swarming

Is this the chappie advertising blue nucs and white cartons on fleabuy less bees of course?

Did not want to give me a definitive reply as to prices...........................

Exmoor bogwater??????????? a diminishing supply if the water level this summer in Lake Wimbleball are anything to go by, trout were positively jumping out!!!!

Thats the one,has several on there....but i don't believe it has much to do with selling the box's...

I am not going to write a dissertation on swarming here but.

A 2nd year queen is more liable to swarm. Yes and no.

A 2nd year queen is more liable to swarm yes. Why? Because she is producing a constant amount of pheromone which is going further and further as the population increases making the individual dose smaller and smaller.

In the case of an over wintered nuc that is just no the case as she is still hardly used as it were and so her 2nd year as the unit builds up the risk of swarming is not increased.

New queens retarding swarming is to quite a large extent a bit of a fallacy anyway but that is another discussion.

So you feed your bees imported honey?

So you keep your bees locked up? Surely that's the only way you could with 100% certainty make sure they don't pick up honey from somewhere else.

You tell me. There is no legislation that bees adhere to. When they have all died out because of disease from unwittingly eating imported honey it will be too late. A friend told me recently that he had been quite happy with the 'squeezable' honey from the supermarket. He had a jar of 2011 honey from me and has relegated other to coffee sweetening only. We produce a fine product and should be promoting it instead of sniping at each other over problems from products which come from elsewhere in the world.

Which subspecies are your queens?
you tell me. point was that our native bees have to deal with non indigenous disease/ parasites that we feel it necessary to use chemicals to ensure their survival. Please tell me what our 'native' bees are.

Well ... I think that's some sort of internet record ... just under 5 years between the original post and the response !!! :winner1st::winner1st:

I'm sure Blackcomb will appreciate the speedy response ... he's still around here somewhere ... should be along shortly ... perhaps in 2020 ? :icon_204-2::biggrinjester:
