They become different due to their early 'working' environment.Their development from egg to emergence is the same regardless of time of year so no difference in the preparation of the brood. (does that satisfy the nitpickers more? )

Jurgen Tautz disagrees.

'The temperatures during pupal (my emphasis) development of worker bees greatly influences whether they will develop into a summer or winter bee... The bees 'bake' different characteristics into their offspring.'

He quotes research by Fiola Bock where summer and winter bees were artificially engineered in an incubator - 'summer bees' at 36 degrees C, 'winter bees' at 34.5 degrees C.

The latter were active for much longer.

So winter bees vs summer bees:

Winter bees have larger fat reserves.
Winter bees can live for 6 months or so, summer bees 6 weeks.
Levels of Juvenile Hormone is much higher in summer bees.
Levels of Vitogellin is much higher in winter bees.

This is about as much difference physiologically as I can find... Any body have anything else?

In fact, with our previous dachshund I was once called upon to wade in as she was on the point of tearing out a fox terrier's windpipe!! Surprised me as I'm more used to dealing with spanirls, stroppy foxhounds and terriers.
Another thing about daxies - you cross them and they'll sh!t all over you

Read Celia Davis's 'The Honey Bee Inside Out'. She explains the differences, and reasons for the differences, between winter and summer bees really well.

Dont get me wrong I think they are great had one some time ago, heart of a lion and the guts to go with it. Was so laid back unless something got wrong side of him then the S**t did hit the fan
