What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Interesting, though I've not had cbpv (yet).
Would it be feasible to add a very lightly weighted flap to the bottom to act as a one-way valve so it was never used as an entrance for bees or wasps.
the trouble with all these 'modifications' to the original concept of the 'no floor' treatment for CBPV is just that - there is no floor - the chute idea is not a bad one and may work, but the whole idea is that you take away the floor and discourage worker bees from going down there to tidy up - therefore picking up the infection.
Be careful that you are not just giving them a different floor, but just further away from the cluster

I would lift the hive to ensure there was 2-300mm below the entrance so hopefully they would not investigate the corpses.

Being stuck in the Bee shed with it p***ing down outside I was looking at making something with the limited timber I had in there
I decided to make a CBPV floor from some old correx notices I picked up some time ago.
Now that's great idea
Ah! I was imagining you had an entrance above the chute for the bees to come & go
Yes I would. I have previously used a floor with the mesh removed but I might show this to my handyman who is bored stiff not being able to get out into the garden.

I think it's a really good idea ... I've not had CBPV in my apiary but I know that it is around in my area.

I share Stan's frustration about the garden - ours is waterlogged and it's not stopped raining for days down here, just walking on it is hard enough, it's times like this when I really need a polytunnel. I need a few fine days as well to get the stuff in my workshop outside and tidy things up so that I can get in and do some work in there, it seems to have got very congested over the last few months.

After the comments I think I will make an entrance in the rim of the floor to replace the existing entrance position. This will hopefully stop bees investigating the ground below the cone.

Same here. I was planning on doing some stuff outdoors today because the forecast was for just a few light showers, but it's bucketing down and so dark you'd think the Sun hadn't risen.

Not a million miles from you but beginning to wonder - is there a sun?

Comes and goes up here ... dry for half an hour and then the skies darken and just now we had half an hour of really vile hailstones ... and now the sun has just come out again ... can't keep up !

If we have many more days like this Philip I will run out of Correx signs! After yesterday's effort with the CBPV floor and the conversations regarding nuc measurements I thought I would challenge myself to make a nuc using the signs.

I then thought it might be a bit chilly for the girls with only 3mm of Correx so decided to insulate it! :laughing-smiley-014 :willy_nilly:

Interesting ... I'm still thinking about making some PIR hives and I was going to line them with thin plywood ... I hadn't thought about correx ... and I have a couple of sheets of correx in store !! Might work as well as plywood for lining the PIR and it will be a lot lighter and even better insulation ....

And a lot cheaper! ( especially if you can wait until after the next election) :laughing-smiley-014

If you have a go with PIR for full hive boxes or nucs can you post on here please?

Derek Mitchell made them and posted pictures here.
I suspect they have been lost in the changeover but I’ll have a look

I like the little tunnel entrance. Is that to keep out wasps/robbers?

Made up a couple of supers and a bunch of frames over the weekend, ordered a couple more along with frames and foundation. Not sure if i'll have too many now but I suppose it's good to be prepared just in case. Also finished an OMF and roof (from timber) for some spare poly nuc parts I had - cheaper than buying the roof and floor as I had the timber in the workshop.

Hopefully i'm on the right track to be ready for the season ahead (or, as ready as I can be, but the bees will let me know, i'm sure!). My first full season is now underway - gulp :oops:bee-smillie

My only concern would be the bees clogging the small exit space on the chute, if there is large scale death and dying and from previous experience it can happen quickly, I would maybe make the exit a little bigger. Hopefully you won’t have to use it.

I think the hole at the bottom of the shute is large enough at about 40mm square but unsure if the 45deg slope is adequate to ensure the corpses fall out.
