Can they climb under an outcrop to pass it? Google Steddle or Staddle Stones and apply the same logic to preventing access to your hives etc. Its not rocket science, just medieval practicality.
Quite possible they can’t but needed a quick solution until I figure out how to amend the hive stands.

A pretty serious loss of bees for this time of year.
Is that from before or after you fitted the 6mm mesh?
Before unfortunately and it’s possibly from either a nearby hive or a nuc so hoping they can recover ok.

Quick solution from John's suggestion would be to place the hive on a piece of ply/correx about 500mm+ square that would give an minimum overhang of 20mm all round.

Edit, this would only work with a single hive stand!

Of which I have precisely none! I think i’ll stick with mesh. Cheaper than re-doing all my hive stands! However, will pass that suggestion on to others if they have the same issue.

A website I looked at said pygmy shrews move into rarely used items. So a beekeeper manipulates a hive, a bee haver rarely looks in, hence rarely used item.
It’s winter. I think we’re all ‘bee havers’ at this time of year
