Can they climb under an outcrop to pass it? Google Steddle or Staddle Stones and apply the same logic to preventing access to your hives etc. Its not rocket science, just medieval practicality.
Quite possible they can’t but needed a quick solution until I figure out how to amend the hive stands.
 
A pretty serious loss of bees for this time of year.
Is that from before or after you fitted the 6mm mesh?
Before unfortunately and it’s possibly from either a nearby hive or a nuc so hoping they can recover ok.

Quick solution from John's suggestion would be to place the hive on a piece of ply/correx about 500mm+ square that would give an minimum overhang of 20mm all round.

Edit, this would only work with a single hive stand!
 
topped up fondant in apiary....2 of 14 colonies not made it sadly...i lost none last year, but not surprised about these two as late splits with insufficient to get through winter i think
