Hive was supposed to go to its new home 7am this morning, but when I went to shut up the entrance last night they were still partying - so got up at stupid o'clock (4am!!!!) and the little ******* were still at it. Had to postpone delivery........

Made a insulated hive cover to go with 4th colony to leave us this summer... The beekeeper has to find homes for the same again otherwise I've got build more insulated brood boxes for them to overwinter with us.

This evening, went in to the requeened hive and removed the cap off the candy plug. Moved an occupied bait hive from the field to Garn cottage for rehiving later in the week. But most of the day i've been at the royal Welsh show, firstly attending the launch of the Welsh Government/Woodlands trust pollinator plan and giving an interview for BBC radio Cymru which was aired this evening, then to the honey show to man the WBKA stand - stopping en route to see that my honey had won first in one class and second in another!:winner1st: and after seeing the entry that got first in the frame of honey class wishing I'd put one of mine in, any one as they were all probably better! had an enjoyable afternoon talking to kids and would be beekeepers about the craft. Just watched a recording of the HTV news - thanks to some English couple achieving the rather unusual feat of becoming parents my airtime was cut down to a few seconds - an hour of filming and chat gone to waste!

Took off another 2 supers last night and returned the wet's this morning one of the girls got excited and decided to give me a nice present.

Quite excited as i'm hoping this is summer honey not OSR!. I filled the 40kg tank pritty much from two supers got a lot of honey as they jam packed it.

Also queen supplier rang yesterday and confirmed my 2 new queens will be sent out on 8th August. First time i'll be requeening as not had much luck with queens this year most of my own doing though apart from one supercedure.

What type of supers are you using to get 20kg or almost from one?

Chris

Swienty langstroth poly 3/4 with dadant frames, bees seem to love them and jam pack them when theres a flow on. I was going to use woodern supers above the first poly super but am sticking to poly for the moment. I might have typed that wrong as its probably 30kg due to the level on the tank not being full.

Broke my record for the amount of honey extracted from one 12-frame Commercial super - 29.5lb. Mainly lime.

As i said in another thread this week before it was pulled ( it’s gone to that place!!!) , the beauty of this forum is you can find out information no matter what type of beekeeping you do .
I think you have just solved a problem for me . At present I still transport down frames , wax etc for my Langstroths here, from the Uk . If the ¾ Langstroth works with Dadant frames , then I have a solution, i can get the frames and wax in France . Will pm you a request about hive sizes as Langstroth have an international variation in sizes this also applies to the English version of Dadant .

Swienty poly langstroths, the ones sold by P@ynes, have the MD supers as standard. http://www.swienty.com/shop/default.asp?catid=1086

Frame sizes are best described on the Ma1semore site. You need to look for MD shallow (Modified Dadant Shallow) frame.

'Jumbo Langstroth' frames are the same as MD deep.

Not that I'm likely to buy a French Dadant, but what's the difference?

I don't know .... with the cost of beekeeping across the channel about half what it is over here perhaps us beeks on the Southern shores should consider a combined booze and bees cruise to stock up on essentials in France ? Portsmouth to Cherbourg ?

French Dadant has a brood frame of 43.5cm x 30cm and a super frame of 43.5cm x 16cm

BB are either 10 frame or 12 frame and a rushette, literally small hive is 6 frame.

The rest is logic.

After a week of me and the neighbours getting stung, finally after sitting in the bathroom watching the nasty bees, realised that they are leaf cutter, they have filled an insect box with eggs and leaf bits, now I have to figure out how to get rid of them as they are such a pain in the bum. Has anyone got any helpful ideas?

You're being stung by leaf cutter bees? Now that is strange, they have to be about the least aggressive of even the solitary bee species.

Here they make their "nests" between the sides of my hive lids and the hives or supers, fantastic structures.

I thought that they were friendly until last week. They've been very annoying. Funnily enough in this months gardeners world is an identification page which helped. The bamboo tubes in the insect nest box are rammed with bits of leaves too.

Fitted travelling screens to hives ready for move to new out apiary tomorrow. Will close up tonight.
Also painted last coat on syrup well of Ashforth poly feeders, ready for use in future.

Sounds like you've been very successful with them, these nesting boxes are a great idea although they haven't caught on here in France yet.....

.....they will if the French think they can eat them.
