What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had an issue with carni's coming from somewhere whether its a wild colony on someone's colony. No sign of robbing on the garden hive, but me and three neighbours been left with a few stings each. No sign of them today thank god. Did manage to extract one super and got one gallon of honey. Still got to seperate capping and honey yet though.

Removed the poly nuc. that had been robbed and starved last month, ready to clean. I had tried to rescue them but they were too little and I was too late. A quick look in the top of the white queen's hive, lots of comb and nectar.
Made up a super and filled with frames. A little cooler here today. Hope tomorrow is the same so I can inspect the larger colony in comfort.

Without knowing I discovered today that i have one more colony. Above QE is second queen ( no from emergency cells, maybe swarm cell).. Now I have to split it..

This morning I put out my first two apideas on a custom-built mating station (I.e. a pallet on legs with each quarter painted a different bright colour...); this evening I took off six full supers - more than my whole crop for last year but less than half what I'll have this year when the supers left on the hives get capped! :) And SWMBO just very kindly offered to take the children to the park tomorrow morning for a few hours so that I can extract in the morning and don't have to do it tonight :) :)

Watched bees bring in HB - first ghost bees of the year. HB was flowering two weeks ago but majority is just starting.

Only need some rain to freshen everything up - forecast next week.

Not even been down to the apiary yet! Just back from a week in Cornwall !
Glorious weather .
Ghost bees will be bees returning from foraging Himalayan balsam the flower of which has a mechanism for anointing the bee with white pollen as it enters in search of nectar !

It's days like today that I wonder exactly why I've got involved in this. It was never my hobby, I was never going to get involved, and I've now invested time, money and effort into it, I don't want to watch the other half be impatient, completely stuff up hive examinations and talk about doing silly things that will completely waste the point of some of the stuff we've spent time doing (What's the point of artificial swarming with the aim of replacing some of the nastier queens (which to my mind aren't nasty at all) if you aren't going to wait to find out the temperament of the new bees first?!)

ARGH!!!!! :hairpull:

Rant over. Maybe I'll feel better for it. Now off for round 2 with the other 5 hives.

Built frames and added supers to more hives. Noticed one white bee returning home! Balsam is very early this year up my neck of the woods!

Carried out my first ever solo hive inspection on a swarm colony I got from a friend. They were already on 6 full frames and since last Sunday have filled the other five. I didn't spot the queen but definitely saw lots of eggs so she must still be there right? I had already put a super on at my friend's advice. Very pleased with their temperament - I had my full suit with proper leather gloves but not one bee landed on my hands and not one bee buzzed my veil unlike the times I have looked at others hives. They really were very unconcerned, and I feel thoroughly chuffed and very calm myself now!

Just had the opposite happen :( One Queen right colony kicked off grand style !
I took a fair battering (applying ammonia now )
Carried on interfering with the inspections of the other colonies.
I don't know the reason but should the next inspection be likewise then they are doomed, I don't mess around requeening, I cull the lot as I can't afford bad tempered queens drones in the area!

35°C here in the shade, just as well there is nothing to do now until the end of August unless it's add some more supers but that's an evening job.

Interrupted a poor day's fishing for a teaching session at the association apiary. My queen in the swarmed down there has mated and started laying :hurray: down there. Hoing she can build up as bees seem a bit on the short side (although they have managed to finish filling and cap a super!. On the way back to my fishing called home to remove condemned queen from her colony in preparation for introducing her predecessor - arrived yesterday whilst i was at the game fair and even though I asked the postie nicely to leave her in the shed, she'd spent all day in the hallway (South facing glass door :banghead:) luckily we had an overcast day yesterday.
Abandoned fishing eventually (my back was too painful to fish much, everyone else fed up as it was too hot (I told them so Friday!) So back home, new queen now in hive and super put on as they are getting a bit cramped. Now going to sit on the (newly mown - I have been good today :Angel_anim:)lawn with SWMBO and throw some dark and stormys (made with Sailor Jerry's spiced rum) down my throat :D:seeya:

What a fantastic photo Goran! Did you take it yourself or get it from somewhere on the net?

By myself. Last year my hives were with many yellow marked queens.. It was interesting to find a real queen..

Also one pic. is as my avatar.. Heavy loaded..

Moved a nuc into a 14 x 12 BB this morning, spent the afternoon extracting 20 frames from the other two hives, even 'she who cast no shadow' got involved, we've ended up with 34lbs of the amber nectar, not bad for a first attempt :hurray:

Regards

Even though I started in the "relative" cool - +22C - by the time I finished it was +31C in the shade and the last 6 colonies were in full sun, I was melting.

Queen mating has been very good this season (what a difference a year makes)
14 ripe queen cells placed in colonies and Apideas and 21 days after emergence all but one have eggs and larvae and 9 have sealed worker brood too.

What results have others had with their queen rearing efforts?
