called by osr filed apiary after work.
14degs 18:00 bees still working the osr hard!

Popped a second BB under the bronze medalists 'cos they're on 8 now and making cups & drones.

Gave a second super to the lot that's going the fastest, but those girls are going to swarm next week if I don't attend to matters tomorrow - I can feel it in me water & they're sending scouts to look at holes in walls. Bait hive set up close by, just in case.

Checked the QC in the box above the Horsley on the AS from last weekend. It'll be popping out in 2 days but with it being very warm today, I'm taking no chances so gate fully open/excluder closed.

Moved last weekend's 2 frame nuc into a proper box 'cos it's now a 3 frame nuc, and gave it another foundation to play with. (this lot came through winter in a mating nuc)

Fed the spare QC box - those girls are feasting!

20 in the shade now, so glad to have it all done before noon.

Tomorrow, the biggies get a proper seeing to.

Looks like another 2 weeks on OSR, then back to their new des res.

Went down to bees bee jacket and gloves on// thaught something crawling on thigh, 3 stings on legs later found a hole in trousers crotch...... Must of been my lucky day

I just had to fix one of those and after I got that sting on my chin I found 8 holes in my hood.
I WONT be buying a buzz bee suit again they are terrible, its dropping to pieces after 9 months

Put more honey into the warmer ready for second batch of soft set. Sitting in the garden at the moment reading my beecraft mag. Stella is in the fridge she likes the cold :spy:

Removed remaining 2 QCs from large hive and inserted frame of brood and larvae - cut as per Mel Disselkoen's OTS instructions..

They are a bad tempered lot so I am using them as a Queen rearing hive.. and will eventually requeen. Frame from a quiet gentle hive of bees.

Nice and warm 16C - sunny,.bees working hard..

Temporarily placed 1 QC in a 3 frame nuc I had made up earlier in the week so they can get on and rear some more bees before I eventually requeen them as well.

Checked the Queen less hive with QC, looking for the one you always miss, found they were raising another so used it as an opportunity to split.

Now have two Queen less hives, each with a QC. And about 2 days apart for emerging Queens...

Did some preparation for tomorrow's inspection (showing a fellow councillor my bees so i want to look efficent for a change!! spare broods, frames floor at the ready in case of A/S and a couple of supers (remember those) but bound to have forgotten something, started painting a few new roofs - just going down the club now to see a man about bespoke galvanised covers .........and a dog! :D won't be put long unfortunately as i've got to drive SWMBO back from the station after a girls' night out

My OH said "Don't get too excited, but I think you'd better buy me my own bee suit"

:)

Added a second BB for my bailey change of the blackened wax on the BB. It means the hive is now BB, BB, Super, QE, Super, Super and almost as tall as I am!! I hope they take the hint and move up into the new BB instead of using it as a store!! Fingers crossed.

Remembered what inspecting on a warm day is like!

Had fun this afternoon watching masonary bees collecting clay from an excavation in the garden. My dog loved them too but I had to call him away this evening as his interest was becoming more 'practical'.

Called home from work, as the bees were "flying round in a cloud". Called for experienced help who caught a swarm, then later on this afternoon I also caught a tiny cast. Plus the bait hive which has been empty for ages has had bees going in and out all day.

After all the frenetic activity I thought I better check my hives; two had numerous charged queen cells and no sign of the queens.......knocked them back to one, unsealed cell each and retreated inside for my tea and a glass of wine.

Phew!

Dummies my only hive (14x12) national down to 4 frames. Very weak colony. Fed with ambrosia syrup and vitafeed gold in a frame feeder. The queen is laying but very slowly, hopefully she will pick up.

Opened my empty 2nd hive up to hopefully catch a swarm.

After trying to do my first AS last Sunday and managing to loose my queen I shut everything up hoping she'd flown back into the original hive. Have left them for a week and looked today and there she was large as life - phew. Now have two hives, she is a very prolific queen but keep finding new queen cells in orginal hive, think it's going to be a seriously hard job to keep her from disappearing with a swarm.
