Was lucky enough to have my phone at the ready when this queen decided to lay an egg.

Frustrating day!

Got a call to remove a swarm from a beautiful Manor House garden at about 4.30 yesterday. I was in the area so went straight there to find an enormous swarm about half way up a small Acer.
The homeowner had seen the swarm come from a neighbours chimney about 30 minutes earlier.
I spent 10 minutes chatting to the homeowners before gently knocking the swarm into a large 40 litre box I made especially for large swarms. I put the frames in, lightly fitted the crown board to allow the vigorous fanning and placed the box below the tree.
Because I was due at a meeting I left the box there to pick up the few stragglers and said I would return at 8.
I duly returned at 8 to find an empty box! Little buggers had pissed off!
Had they already decided on a more suitable home before I had so rudely detained them?
The swarm was on two separate branches which were about 6" apart and not touching, were there two swarms?
Anyway frustrating evening and I'm wondering if I did something wrong...... ah well.

Seems queen remain out ( You didn't shake it in the box). You can shake all the bees but no queen and they will go away.. It is visible usually when You shake it in the box, and if the bees seem confused at the entrance - not fanning all together queen isn't inside. When I shake it in box, I don't leave roof open, just entrance.
Quite recently unfortunately I had a swarm and when shook it, bees looked confused and not entering the box.. Queen went beneath the bottom board, so I had to make correction..

I don't think there was any doubt that the queen was in the box, there was furious fanning at the small gap I left at the top of the box and the entrance. I also checked the branch where a small group of bees congregated. I had laid out a sheet below the branch to make sure I didn't lose HM in the grass as well.
It will remain a mystery but I would be tempted to leave the stragglers next time and hope that the move would stop their rehousing plans. 😊

Checked all the colonies. 2 new queens from Ged accepted and laying up a storm. 3 double side brood frames of eggs and larvae to point of capping in a week, no immediate supercedure attempts. both colonies taken on a new calm disposition too.

Times like these make me happy.

Now we just need a summer and autumn flow.......

It happens, hence the reason some trap the queen in with a QE under the swarm.

Checked my one ‘just n case’ Apidea. Full of bees but the queen cell was a dud.

Excellent result, it makes me feel on top of the world when you spot them eggs and worker brood from new Queens.

Just checked my Apideas....every single one has absconded leaving the queen cells behind.
Times like these make me frustrated....

I'll show you how i did it..:D .. i have four emerged virgin Queens running around in Nucs at the moment, i just hope they manage to get mated with this unpredictable weather... no Swallows to contend with this year so i might be lucky.

Ouch. The nuc I set up with 2 QCs before I sourced new queens wandered to the opposite end of their box and Left the QCs to chill. Fortunately I found available queens.

Set up a queenless nuc for eager receipt tomorrow of my first ever 'bought in' queen. Thanks @Hivemaker ;-)

Re-Queened a Hive that has gone Feral.

I was in 2 suits with gaffa taped gloves and sleeves and thick padded garden gloves on top. I was in the hive for 3 mins to release the new queen and after I finished and got away I counted the stings in my gloves and outer suit, 130 in total and not one in me (thank god).

Braver man than me. I would have petrolled them.

Hawthorne still flowering!
