For several years I've used a modified Dave Cushman idea:
a framed piece of mesh across the front with an elastic bungy strap around the back. No fixed attachment.
The frame is close to the hive at top and bottom, but open at sides. Use spacers for poly hives and large landing boards.
Stays on in all weather, easy to take off, can be used on different types of hive and put away for the winter. Best of all seems to work, although I do use a waspbane just outside the apiary
