I have united hives in the past using the newspaper method. However - how is it done when both hives have supers.

I will be on Islay for a few days in May. :)

Can you explain the scenario you are thinking of involving supers?

simple - newspaper on top of the receiving colony and supers, brood box, and if that has any supers, supers on above, if you are concerned about the queen getting into the shallows, deploy multiple QX's

If it's any help, it doesn't matter whether the Q- colony goes on top or on the bottom

The supers can be added to other colonies to get them out the road and to save a massive stack.

Then paper or air freshner to unite the brood boxes.
