I found that I had so many triggers ~ getting up, getting shaved, after breakfast, getting in the car, getting out of the car, stopping at traffic lights, getting to work, picking up the phone, with coffee, after coffee, any meeting, with anyone else smoking, with any meal, with any drink - I even occasionally found I had two cigarettes on the go at the same time ... and EVERYONE smoked ... and more ... it was almost impossible to avoid a trigger ... you just have to stop and resist the impulse ...but take heart after about the first three years the impulse goes away almost completely.

I had to accept, after stopping for the umpteenth time, that I was an addict and like any addict I could not have just one ... it's a long time ago now and in the end the one thing that stopped me was bronchitis every winter that lasted until May. I was so ill when I stopped that I couldn't breathe ... I went to the doctors and asked him what he could do about my chest and he sat there with a cigaretted in his ash tray and told me I had to stop smoking ... I said that was a bit rich coming from someone smoking a cigarette and he said 'I'm not the one with bronchitis'.

It's a bit easier these days as smokers are largely considered pariahs ... shoved out in the cold - everywhere public is a no smoke zone, packets that tell you cigarettes will kill you and the cost is astronomic ... in my smoking youth they were still telling me that smoking Marlborough was GOOD for you .... Times have changed. Save the planet and stop smoking.
I've worked out I will save £120 a month on not buying tabacco I use to roll my own.
That's another 120 I can spend on bee equipment
£1440 a year how many hives could I buy with that ( nucs) or queen's even.
:)

Wasn't that hypothenuse? I vaguely recall something about squares and the other two sides
No that was pythagoras... I also knew his Welsh cousin Dai Agonal ...

The square on the hypotenuse in a right angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides ... Beaten into me by Mr Fyffe ... who I wish I had thanked as I was a gobby 13 year old who he must have seen something in and put me wise... although I didn't appreciate it at the time !

My downfall was Archie Medes and his bloody screw ... I never managed to master fluid dynamics and the forces and friction in his infernal contraption which should not work ,... some things should be just accepted and not analysed... bit like beekeeping really ;)

These greeks have quite a few Welsh cousins...
Should that be celtic cousins?
Boo! who! da ka was maybe a celtic cousin.
But to the Romans.
Celtic is a word made up for the convenience of the Victorians. The Welsh were here well before then, originally called Brythonic, they called themselves Cymru meaning friends or companions - it's where the word Cumbria comes from. The name Wales comes from the Germanic Wallhas used by the Anglo Saxons and came to mean strangers or any people beyond their territory.
Boadicea/Boudica/Boudicca (Buddug in Welsh - which has now developed to be the root origin of the word victorious victorious) was queen of the Iceni so yes, Brythonic or 'celtic'

Being a scholar of our native tongue, I was always impressed by the Welsh poet, Di Ode.

Ah but can you recall the proof?

Ah but can you recall the proof?
Remember it ? ... I still have NIGHTMARES about proving it .. Len Fyffe looking at my geometrically constructed squares on each side of the triangle and remarking that he could probably draw neater lines using a quill pen dipped in my blood .... they didn't mince words in those days !!

My maths tutor and maths teacher were much morer sensible (both went to Uni together, luckily only Mike discovered inebriation), I think Mike's words were one early evening dedicated to geometry "I believe Pythagoras provided all the 'proof' centuries ago and since nobody has found a way to disprove his theory, I'm happy enough to take his word for it, I'm sure Hywel (or Mr Evans as he's your teacher) would agree with me - now hurry up, the Aman Hotel opens in half an hour"

Far more pragmatic view than having to re-prove something that Pythagoras did successfully and comprehensively in days when the nearest thing to a calculator was a bag of beads ... I had to regurgitate the proof for one of the questions in ny O Level maths and Mr Fyffe's words about my blood echoed in my ears and my pencils were a lot sharper as a result ! Like I said, I should have thanked him - when I can't remember what I had for breakfast it's quite reassuring that I can remember how to prove Pythagoras nearly 60 years on ... I'm sure I will find a use for it one day - like a lot of things I hang on to !

In your opinion - but doesn't make it anywhere near fact, like Trump, you have no proof to back up your hypotheses therefore (thereof has a totally different meaning) another possible source of fake news
I have proof of finding the virgin, the mated queen still in the hive during/after what most beeks would call a mating swarm. Most beeks would not look would they? They sit there pontificating in their Trumpian manner like you do that it must be a mating swarm.

Since the thread has digressed somewhat, guess what, I never felt the need to start smoking in the first place. Well, let's hope that is the New Year's resolution for many a young person. I remember my father in law asking why he was dying of lung cancer and he had been smoking cigars for at least 20 years.

Well it's obvious that what you witnessed was not a mating swarm.
Which some of us have definitely witnessed more than once (and knowing exactly what was in the nuc at the time)

So sorry for your father in law. Cancer is a horrible way to die. I hope he and you found some peace before he went.
