Reading through the formula for Thymolated syrup in technical section. Have Isopropyl 99% Alcohol :p. Is this the strength envisaged? Would'nt leave us too healthy :)

Would the alcohol not evaporate off, after the thymol crystals dissolve?

If not....happy bees...way hay!🥂

No you keep it in a container and the prescribed “dose” is 1ml per litre of syrup. I’m sure somebody will come along to say the amount is different but I use 1ml and 5ml if treating infection.

I’ve never used thymol treated syrup, but seeing I have one hive with chalkbrood would you be able to share your recipe please?
Using thymol crystals what weight of crystals to alcohol?

Thanks for that recipe.
I see it’s for Nosema, would it also stop chalkbrood?

I am following advice given on forum to ventilate hive more but is thymol treated syrup helps too its a bonus.

You only use a few ml, you need it as thymol doesn't dissolve in water

Many thanks for clarificiation(s) Mod's.... EHB when treating infection you use dosage of 5ml. Is this to the litre or the gallon (imperial) as per Hivemaker?

I use Methylated Spirits instead of Isopropyl alcohol.

Works just as well - cheaper and easier to obtain.

Yes, 5ml of emulsified mix per gallon (and don't be too uptight about exact measures and HM stated he put a double dose in once with no harm to the bees

If you have chalkbrood at this time of year it's more likely to be a genetic malfunction, for which the age-old answer is to re-queen.

Chalkbrood in spring is more likely to have been caused by damp and cold, perhaps by a period of bad weather after colony expansion.

I've got 1ml per litre, or 5mls per gallon if you like, for thymolated syrup but if you are treating an active infection by spraying the bees it's 5ml per litre of weak syrup

If your ventilating the hive involves placing matchsticks under the roof then take care not to strike the matches anywhere near the isopropyl alcohol...

I've always used Emulsified Thymol, it keeps the mould off my buckets and feeders - plus the added benefit of looking after nosema
