A lot coming in just now in south London hive. Almost a full super in a week. More good weather on way. Happy days. :drool5::sifone:

My bees were filling supers for fun today, bramble mostly I think, if the warm weather holds they'll fill a super in three to four days as the flow builds, I'm already very pleased with this summer's prospects, the bees are looking great, bouncing in fact, there's good ground moisture and the forecast looks favourable, it couldbe another record breaking season for me.

Was in Ceredigion today, the Bramble was looking more advanced than it is here, lots in full flower.

I'd be in the same position if I hadn't had a disastrous spring of swarms, lost queens and failed matings. A learning year, unfortunately, but I have held together a couple of strong colonies and there, it is finally pouring in today for the first time.

:yeahthat:
I've had the same sort of year....... only got a couple of hives at their peak at the right time.

This summer is expected to be the worst for beekeeping in Ukraine. There are two reasons: pesticides and weather. I've heard about the heatwave in France. We had almost the same wave during whole June. The temperature of 30-35°C was every day. This is far more than 23°C climate norm. This may be a good weather for a weekend on a beach. Some southern regions haven't seen rains since early spring. So the so-called June gap has been continuing till now. The stores are empty. My region (Vinnytsia) had enough rains in May but nevertheless the flow is poor. Acacia, lime, wild herbs are zero. All beeks are waiting for sunflower.
But here is another problem: pesticides. June is a month of pesticides. Imagine, gentlemen, you are surrounded by hundreds of hectars of wheat, corn and soy, and all these stuff is heavily treated with all possible chemicals. Farmers use military terminology such as a "fight" or a "war for harvest". All kind of weapon is allowed. Government does not see beekeepers as well as farmers. So many beekeepers, both commercial and hobbiysts, don't have enough bees for sunflower. This is the second summer of heavy losts of colonies due to pesticides in all regions of Ukraine. I call this phenomenon "the curse of a black soil". It means that better land - worse for bees and nature in general. In my region 95% of land is under commercial use (wheat, corn, soy).
I have managed to avoid June treatment in the city. But you know, a city is not a place for a big apiary. And I'm afraid Ukraine is getting to be a bad place for bees.
The weather forecast is good by the way. Sunflower will save us as usually.

Nice,do you overwinter on the brood box or do you leave 1 super? Thx for your answers

Hi thibault,

I overwinter on single Commercial brood boxes only...unless a Commercial poly nuc where they might be on a double poly brood if they’re strong enough. Commercial is just my personal brood box size of choice, although many can’t get used to them (short lugs etc). But I like them.
