Came home after work to discover a swarm in a near tree. Got the kit on to collect but the bees were flying back to the hive.

The hive that swarmed had no queen. I carried out an artificial swarm on it and removed the old queen. Week later
I removed all queen cells exept for 1. Checked the hive over on the weekend and the queen cell was gone. Obviously hatched and awaiting mating.

Why did this hive swarm?? The only thing I can think of is there must have been another queen cell that I did not see. Has this happened to anyone els?
Or I think there is a strong cross of carnolian in the hive. Could there swarming instinct be so strong that they swarmed for the sake of it just to get it out of their system?

I have never heared of a swarm returning to a hive unless the queen was clipped.
