Why not just plonk a box on that then ?

Yes, I put mine up a bit, but no more than 3m or so. Life and limb aren't in much risk at that height (touch wood).

It's difficult to avoid playing "Simon says" in beekeeping. One day you read one thing, the next day something else....sometimes from the same person. I think it's got to be whatever height you're comfortable with......you don't want to be killing bees when you fall onto your head from five metres.

I picked a dozen swarms up in bait hives last year and they were all between 1 and 2 m high.

At the end of the day, if your dry cavity is better than anything else in the area, hight is no issue. I have had bees fly into empty hives on the ground before now (which is very confusing when the box in question was only emptied out the day before!)
