Is it too early to put on a super, took a quick peak in to day and they seem to be packed already.

5/6 solid frames of brood. Have they that much?

Looks like I'll need to do a proper inspection, They have filled all the frames (is a deep national) but I don't know how many are with brood, just seems to be twice as many bees in there than at the end of summer last year..

Possibly blocked with last seasons ivy .... may need to move the outer frames and replace with drawn comb to give some laying room.

I was wondering have things changed over the last few years supering on 5/6 frames of brood, I thought it was recommended 8 frames of brood??

Ive supered on 6 frames the last two years with no problems mainly because the brood box only had 9 frames the rest were dummed down.

I've also had 8 over 8 on double brood because they wouldn't draw the out side frames.

I just super when the flows start. Never counted frames and never had a problem as long as they are fit and healthy!

Hi Mark,
If you look at Dani's reply, notice she asks about 5 or 6 solid brood frames. In a situation like that, there will probably be other frames that contain some brood, brooded frames so likely to be 8 frames that contain brood.
With solid, sealed combs, there is going to be an explosion in the population as well, so another good reason to give them space.

:iagree:

I'd be even tempted if there was a really good flow being as the op said it was a deep brood box to put two supers on.

Just to clarify 6 frames of capped brood and some bias making it to 8ish.. Steady honey flow super added.
