Hahaha, it is often 40+, in the shade, here in the summer, Varroa is a big problem and is not negatively affected.

I see many beekeepers using polynucs but wooden hives for full colonies and have wondered why not poly all the way

I do
Imho a colony that is small enough to fit in a nuc needs all the help it can get-so it's poly.
But in my locale anything bigger does not so it's timber

Most hives are solar heated already.
At least some of the time.

It makes sense to me that the bees would try to regulate the temperature in the hive.
