This week was the first graft of the season and in true beekeeping fashion it didn't go according to plan. I had caged the queen on a chosen dark frame and when I went to release her today her entourage managed to free her up before she could lay an egg.
I had to look for a suitable frame, found one and bugger here is a big juicy queen cell bang on in the middle of the frame!! Left that frame in peace as I also forgot my bee brush and found another suitable frame but it was freshly drawn and a real nightmare to see the larvae properly or scoop them up.
Unfortunately the circus didn't end there and as I was opening my cell builder I rested the grafting frame upside down on the roof of the next hive and it eventually fell on the floor. By which point I was already pissed off with the whole affair and put the frame in the starter. If I get a single take I will be lucky!!
Spotted a 2nd charged cell on another frame so didn't contemplate if it was supercedure or swarm prep and did a split. These bees didn't attempt to swarm last season and were really productive hence why I picked this one for grafting.
