With the purest German Amc bees having residual Amm mitochondrial DNA in their make up should we be calling them near pure Carniolans?
:iagree:
Near Carnolians.... like Buckfasts ( If there is now such a bee?) should be Near Italians.
With uncontrolled and probably unintentional importation of exotic species there is going to be introgression across breeds...

Welcome to the Homocene!

A race is a homogenous group, so, statistical outliers are easily found and removed from a breeding population.
The German breeders have a "Körung" which is a kind of breeding licence only granted to those tested individuals that conform to the standard. Hence, it is quite easy to know whether you are breeding pure.

:sorry:
Blame Ion Torrent DNA analyses...... millions of tiny proton detectors!

:offtopic: perhaps... but the mitochondrial (mt) DNA is set in the past breeding history of the species... passed down the maternal line.
Once crossed out with another species in a breeding line or pedigree it is set, in that line forever and can not ( as far as is known) be "bred" back out
The sophistication of Ion Torrent sequencing has enabled science to delve into the background of the pedigree lines quickly and cost effectively.
Many of the Cornish variants of Apis mellifera mellifera the Native dark honey bee of the peninsular, have shown Amm mt DNA, which is somewhat surprising considering the level of introgression claimed by some of the exotic sub species fanciers!

As so often stated this is all academic... what beekeepers want is disease free bees adapted to the local environment that are calm, easy to handle and produce a reasonable quantity of quality honey.

:thanks:
