Following the 2007 flooding in my village the parish council set up a flood action group. For my sins I ended up as chairman. It transpired there had been previous floods and groups set up but in every previous case they fizzled out. Not on my watch matey!
It took years to get a proper scheme developed and completed but eventually old watercourses were identified, cleared and new culverts installed where old ones had been blocked or collapsed during large scale housing developments. A new pumping station built to discharge water from ditches into the Yorkshire House. Even now maintenance needs have be reminded to the parish council and the internal drainage board.

Spent years doing similar with no help from others equally effected. Once I am gone it is unlikely anyone will know where the old drainage is located

That's a risk but everything now achieved is documented and filed in the county archive. It does of course require the current councillors to be diligent in their duties. As it happens I was recognized by the current deputy chairman this morning at the local car boot sales and quizzed about some of the routes the drains and culverts follow now. He said I was easier to access than driving to Beverley. He's getting the underground sections inspected and de-silted if required.

Some years back the then competent lads dropped off a gully cleaner for me, they are custom made and very simple but do the job, they clearly knew what the future would bring. A ways down the road from me there is a huge flood alleviation project on the go. The gullies up brew from it are mostly blocked, the ones adjacent me are clear and that is mostly down to me. Some recent repairs have seen the current monkees dumping the leftover tarmac and bricks into the gullies after their repair job. On my patch they listen to what they want to from me then become all clever, until the next time. Count yersen lucky, if only things were so here.
