Was wondering what controls the intake of pollen in a hive .I noticed last year at certain times about 1 in 20 bees coming with pollen and other times 1 in 5 and then sometimes none, and different hives coming in with more pollen than others.

Temperature.

Precipitation.

Amount of brood.

Stores levels of pollen.

Pollen availability.

Numbers of foragers.

Hows that for a start?

Forgot to mention strain of bee. LOL

All the rest I agree with totally.

o90o and PH, shame on you for missing the obvious primary factor.

favourite colour ;)

Pollen is protein and they need this to raise brood. So as brood rearing starts the need for pollen increases. Of course external factors like weather and availability also play their part.
