Thor*es are promoting a new product... a disposable plastic container.. I have emailed them saying I feel it is a very irresponsible product and asking them to think again.

Although good intentions there I feel the whole supermarket food management is a shame. Everything in fact including toys is over wrapped or got plastic tires on it! There should be a real government debate on this ****! It's ridiculous but well done for trying Heather : )

I challenged the manager at Bookers over plastic wrapped turnips. He said they were very aware that people were concerned and they company is taking a fresh look at it. He was also aware that the politicians were looking at it too.

I bought a crate of these years ago and got a hard education from a health food store owner re, estrogen and plastic leeching into the food, particulary honey because it is so acidic. I still have them but they are used as plant pots, I would'nt even give them to jam makers.

I thought it crazy introducing a 5p tax for plastic shopping bags. They should have been banned out right. We should use permanent bags hessian bags or whatever. Same problem as cigarettes. ‘They kill people in their 1000s, generally disgusting and anti social and cost the NHS a fortune for those that aren’t responsible to look after their health. Best to get rid of them really?’

‘Na we’ll just tax them and hope for the best’

Their response..
Dear Ms McNiven

Thank you for the email and I completely understand your sentiments.

We did use to sell metal tins but there were countless problems with using them for beeswax polish. Due to the current regulations polish has to be made with certain ingredients and this reacts with the metal. The tins were also 5 times more expensive that the plastic alternative. We do hope to be able to provide a metal alternative in the future.

There is no reason why these polish pots can’t be recycled and filled again and again with polish. You will find that almost all shoe polish now also come in plastic pots.

There is a large demand for polish containers, and rightly or wrongly, we decided that these plastic ones were the best on offer. We were the first beekeeping manufacturer to shred all our waste cardboard (and collect more from local businesses) to use as packaging in parcels. We have two biomass boilers and burn all our waste wood to heat the factories. We chip other wood for garden mulch and we do not sell polystyrene hives.

The demand for these containers is huge (rightly or wrongly) and with a staff of 90 people we also have to do what is best for our business and sustain and grow that level of employment.

Regards
Rebecca

Now I am plucking up courage to unwrap all plastic at a checkout counter and leave behind in my local supermarket..

Don't forget to take some non plastic containers to tip any milk into, it often comes in plastic containers.

And remember not to use a keyboard or phone or computer with any plastic in it...
And rewire your house to have bare wires without insulation

Plastic is recyclable
There are food grade plastics ( Used for cut comb etc)

Plastic in the environment is only there because governments have not invested in recycling facilities that are free to use and self sustaining.... and of course due to the filthy ignorant habits of mankind.

Discarded fishing equipment is only in the sea because the profitability of fish is so high fishermen can afford to discard them... not worth the diesel ( TAX FREE) to recover.

AND... I think Trhones got hold of the wrong end of the stick when you asked about "plastic pots/ containers!!

Nos da

But they do sell poly nucs and poly mating hives?:icon_204-2:

There is some campaign on the television asking for £3 a month to provide plastic containers for water for some foreign place, would of thought that they could use cardboard rather than plastic, sounds like they are rather preoccupied with killing each other at the moment to have time to make water containers.
