Painting a poly nuc.

I have just purchased a poly nuc and plan to give it a cost of masonry paint. I have a tin of white sandtex and would like to add a bit of coloured paint to the white. Anybody know what paint I could use. Thanks.

Rather than spend another £22 on coloured Sandtex I hope I could add some coloured paint to my white sandtex .

Perhaps buy a tester pot of a dark colour eg green and mix with some of your white. You will not need a lot. Just painted a poly nuc with cream smooth sandtex which did not use a lot for 2 coats.

You don't need to buy another large tin for £22, buy small tins, even a few of different colours to tint the white you already have, they can be bought from about £2.70

Use a radiator roller to paint them, I also have a small brush at hand for those awkward places.

I did 2 Nucs (including Miller feeders) with one pot (350ml I think), the Children managed one Hive (including Miller feeder, Std. BB roof and base) with 2/3 of a pot. I use a ~2" brush.

I think you can colour your Sandtex with any sensible colourant (i.e Not poisonous), given that you don't paint the inside. I do (usually) paint the inside of the Miller feeders with white, but you have that. It has been suggested that the bits in these feeders where the bees go, add a bit of sand to give a coarse climbing frame so they can get out of the goo. I use wooden skewers instead. They do drown in it if you don't do one or the other.

Saw a video where they used old fishing line bunched up to make a feeder filler to stop drowning. Looked good. I've got sand surfaces, but will put in the cord this year to give them and extra chance of climbing out.

I have used Cuprinol shades and the Wilko equivalent, mixed into white masonry paint with good effect. Will tend to be a very pastel shade though .

I got paint dye from fleabay- really cheap and good range of colours.
