I haven't kept bees long enough to compare yields, but OSR varieties today are certainly a lot shorter than in the past. It used to grow well above the hedges, but nowadays doesn't even reach hedge height.

Yes, back in the 80s the rape was taller, smellier and seemed to yield more consistently. Then I was the same height as now, but my sense of smell has diminished, but average yields are definitely less, by quite a bit and are more variable (sensitive to temperature and soil moisture).

These days I do now move my hives right onto the crop, as Finnie has recommended. And I keep fingers crossed for decent weather.
