You can get your own paper from recycling bin. One day old, but works.

Pretty sure my bees can't read so they won't even know it's old news!

All you air fresheners - how many squirts and where do you spray it - all over the top of the frames - in both boxes - in the entrance - up through the OMF?

Not much. Usually when uniting hives, a 2 second burst into each colony from top in quick succession and then join together.

For three frame nuc, add frame 1, then spray one side of frame 1 second, - next to the next frame to be added, add next frame, spray side next to next frame to be added, add third frame.
One second burst on top.
Close up.

Works for me - others may do differently.

Far quicker, easier, no paper flying in wind and unite works almost immediately.

Yorkshire Post best for uniting Yorkshire bees. The "post" is one of the few broadsheet newspapers still being published.

If you are going to use air freshener you only need a quick burst over the top of the bottom box and under the top box, no need to use gallons of the stuff.

Threads like this make all the winter bickering on this forum worthwhile. Thanks all

I tried the newspaper method but all the propolis make the touch-screen sticky

Can anyone suggest a type of air freshener that is safe for the bees?

I just can't do that; sorry, but glad it works for you. But I have done the same with lots of smoke; probably worse for them, I suppose... Worked fine.

I suppose one key is to do it in the evening, whichever method. @jenkinsbrynmair recommended Snelgrove's "The Introduction of Queen Bees" to me. I pass on the recommendation. Fantastic little book.

In difficult cases I have put an exracted comb box between two colonies. I spray mist into cells, that water dilutes the honey.

Amount of honey mix bees heads.

Difficult cases means August, when bees are very sensitive towards robbers.

As far as I am aware, I have killed no bees uniting using air freshener.. I tried paper once. I know it was a real pia and several bees died and the colonies were stressed.

Th great advantage of air freshener - assuming you don't buy Febreeze # - is that ALL the bees are disorientated due to the overwhelming of their sense of smell so the effects are short lived..

# warning : do NOT use Febreeze..

Use nothing less than the Financial Times... printed on unbleached paper.. hence pink!

I read it somewhere!
