new hive, where to drill a vent hole?

... so after all, in winter with a board under or instead the mesh and a reduced entrance that will give me a sufficient ventilation as well during the summer with just the OMF and no additional holes. right?

Open mesh - only insert the board (below the mesh) when
- doing (monthly) varroa count
- trying everything to warm up the hive so that they will get on and drawn some foundation
- minimising ventilation during Apiguard treatment

Use the entrance reducer as you see fit - particularly whenever wasps appear to be a problem. Don't worry about it as regards ventilation (except for Apiguard).

It is possible (but not generally accepted) that extra ventilation might be helpful during a heatwave. However, with an open mesh floor, no extra venting is needed - the bees can manage. Only question is whether, during a heatwave, you can help them manage a little more easily, allowing their effort to be spent more productively.

Did you confirm that your National roof has the proper anti-damp venting, as I indicated above?

I'm waiting for hedgerow to come in about bees living in oil drums in the desert at 40 degree heat with only a small entrance. Solid crownboards for me and mesh floors.

Baggy

Begin
Loop:
If Hear ("Should I add top ventilation")
:banghead:
Explain heat and humidity loss through convection

Else if Hear ("My bees have top ventilation and they are fine")

Endif
goto loop
End
Missing an Endif methinks! :)
