Does this look like mouse damage? Those splinters of wood and indentations (presumably teeth marks?) weren't there a couple of days ago. I don't see any other sign of damage around the hive.

If it is a mouse, any tips?

My guess would be bird rather than rodent.....Difficult one

There are no scratch marks evident, and a mouse or rat would be more likely to start gnawing at an edge, and open-up an existing hole (there is some of that at the top - but why not lower down ?). Those indentations are a lot more like punch marks, than teeth marks - especially in the 'blanked-off slot' - so my money would be (cautiously) on a woodpecker. Albeit a not very bright one. :)

Not green woodpecker far more likely to be a rodent from the marks present which indicate use of incisors.

Hmm, might try borrowing a camera trap and placing it near hive.

In the meantime, is there anything to worry about here or should the mouseguard protect the hive from whatever done the damage?

Whatever it was it looked as though entry was forbidden

Do you live in an area with a hooded/carrion crow or magpie problem?

Stand to be corrected, but I don't believe we even have the green woodpecker on the island.

Historically, woodpeckers are not found in Ireland but I understand that there was a breeding pair of Greens in the vicinity of Phoenix park in the not so distant past. Wood peckers have been sighted in Tullymore Forest Park but I can't remember if they were Yaffles or Greater Spotted.

I would be of the view that these are marks left by the incisors of a rodent. You can see the marks of the two teeth.

Have seen tree rats nibble hives so dont rule them out either.
