Meon Valley BKA auction summary

I had a grand day out at Meon Valley BKA's 37th annual auction today. Plenty of great tea and cake to keep the energy up was a welcome start.

Unlike GBKA auction (next weekend) they had a listing of the 280 odd lots which was helpful.

A lot of langstroth, MD and commercial hives as well as some odd lots including a garden rotavator, pillar drill and a very Heath Robinson hand made extractor that had no gearing......! Work that out for yourself !

I came away with 5 BS nucs and a pair of apideas for a song and a big container of odds and ends which included some fine aluminium feeders for nucs and tools.

I missed out on the solar wax extractors - a lot of demand - and also a heather honey press that didn't make its reserve but by then I wanted to head home.

My other purchase was a wine (mead) cork bottling device that is an engineering marvel and only cost me £14.

Luckily I saved some money on that as the clutch on my 26 yr old Landy was almost with no play in the pedal by the time I got home so it's off to the garage next week to get that fixed !

They shouldn't they were A/S last week ... Bargain really - stuffed full of bees and potentially three colonies for the price of one .. I know whose bees they were and who they were sold to !! Seller is also going to give the buyer a hand with them as well ... good deal all round ! All three colonies for sale were from the same beekeeper ... didn't make as much as the bees did last year though.

Oh ... and I bought an original Workmate (built like a tank and in great condition !) for a fiver !! Some bargains to be had and some things that went for very silly money - more, in fact, than you would pay for new !! Saw lots of friends and the cake and tea was good as well ... Good day ...

It was a good auction with some real bargains to be had by the careful, but some people paid too much. I came away with a boot-full, and had been very careful. I didn't pay £12 for a kilo of wax!

I thought the bees went for a fair price, with final bids nowhere near as high as I'd expected them to go.

The coffee and cakes were very welcome because it was such a hot day, so a big thanks to the ladies who were working away in the kitchens throughout the sale.

Not that I noticed ... my hat was a bit of sartorial elegance though !! We will have to have a Forum meeting point next year to put some real names to the old farts club ...

I'll be at Glos Auction next weekend if anyone else is planning on going ?

(I'll make sure I don't eat onions, asparagus, or artichokes the day before )

I may go to Cheltenham next week sellers only register on the day so no catalogue before hand it would appear
