At Stoneleigh I was given details about a new site that is coming online end of this week, so I promised to let the forum know:grouphug:

www.bid4bees.co.uk

An online auction site specifically for bee equipment, clothing, and any of your unwanted equipment too. ?(beebay :))

May be worth a whirl to keep in bookmarks, may not develop - but I:):) have honoured my promise

Looks quite good - I spent all of 10 seconds browsing the items for sale, then realised it doesn't start till the 15th May, however will keep checking it from then. Thanks for the link.

Dave.

I had a look at it yesterday, from what I can gather it will cost just over ?5 to sell something with a value of ?60 and the it goes up from there, next year there will also be a listing fee which is free in 2009.

to be honest I think it has rather limited potential as its so specialised, trying to convince people that they are better off paying to sell stuff on there rather than on forum sites like this one will be an uphill struggle.

another thing that bothered me a little was FAQ no 2

2. Can I cancel my listing?

Sellers that have placed items up for auction may apply to have their listing cancelled via the 'contact us' link on the home page. Please provide the item number, your User ID and your password when submitting your cancellation request. There is a charge for cancelling your listing early. These charges are ?5.00 for bees, ?2.50 for honey and other bee products and ?1.50 for all other items.

the charges for cancelling are obviously there to discourage people from using it as free advertising which is fair enough, but having to send them my password is a no no, that implies that they need to log in to my account to do whatever need doing which means that I could probably do it IF I could work out how to, so they want to do it so that they can charge me.

I wish them the best of luck as it has the potential to be successfull if they can overcome the many hurdles that are infront of them.

I could set up an auction site on the forum for free if we have enough interest ?

I dont want to tread on anyones toes but in my book a free listing and no seller fee's is better,we already have enough donations to host and run it...

I think the buy and sell section works well as is, but if you have other plans thats up to you.:patriot:

I am more than happy to carry on with just the Buy/Sell section if members think it works, personaly I think its enough.

I agree.

Wee story re auctions.

I was at a roup and there were some 40 hives being sold. I bought a few myself and I think my average was about ?28-30. I gave the mannie rouping out a hand by running up the price a bit as he was a lovely old gent.

So at the last there were two young couples who were after bees but had bottled out time after time and so had not bought anything. The last colony was a decrepit WBC and to cut it short the hammer came down at ?140! The winner looked very pleased then his face dropped like a stone as he realised what he'd done. The other couple just looked relieved.

Dangerous things auctions.

I think buy and sell is enough too.

I love ebay and often buy stuff on there and have done a limited amount of selling to, but sometimes selling is a bit.....well you can end up getting next to nothing for something, okay for the buyer and then reserves put me off so I'd sooner know what the price is and then make a decision. Also are there enough people on here to make an auction?

Not sure as yet if we have enough, traffic wise we get just under 200 members a day loggin although many never post but just read.

I for one would rather keep this site for forum and its buy and sell section, and leave the aution running to others.
There is far too much scope for people to fall out over auctions and we want to keep here as freindly as possible.

For what its worth, I prefer a good old fashioned advert where you know the price. Makes an informed decision much more viable.

I too think the buy/sell section on this site is fine.

By the way the registration form asks for a lot of information on the bid4bees site and it's not providing SSL or https, so all your details would travel across the internet to their site as plain text. There again they may be working on providing more security before the site opens

Am I the only one who noticed these people were not actually inside?
www.bid4bees.co.uk
1.They were in Stoneliegh but not inside the BBKA convention.

2. If they're so computer literate & really interested in Bee Keeping, then how come no one on this forum has known the people behind this for years?
Surely they'd have posted thier idea of opening thier Auction here to thier friends themselves as members of this forum & the other Beekeeping forums? If they really were interested inbeekeeping?

3. Lets see, anyone can run a small auction on the web. costs the price of free software + websites cost next to nothing many are free. The upkeep is minimal. The punters are the ones uploading into Auction sites.

4. It's not that expensive to hire a few students to leaflet outside a convention - to do so doesn't mean affiliation to the convention although it may seem so.

5. All over the UK, thousands of leafleters are hired every year to leaflet outside conventions on subjects which are similar - it's called "Audience Targetting".

6. "Audience Targetting" is clever because the leafleters have training where they're given & learn "how 2 "be nice" handing out leaflets to as many punters as poss"

7. "Audience Targetting" is clever because the leafleters are chosen from people who are "very easy on the eyes" (either sex) & being good at flirting is part of the job. - it helps to change the subject, when I did leafleting years ago I was told to evade questions of the product by using the stock answer (givern in the days training) then by asking the punters personal questions like "are you enjoying this? or "what have you got so far?" and pretend to listen then break eye contact to turn my back & walk a few steps & continue leafleting even if someones talking to me as they'll get the "I'm busy" message eventually & they'll leave happy because whatever else I did "I Kept smiling at them".

8. With leafleting "Anything goes" to get rid of the leaflets & get the bonus & knock off as soon as possible.

9. I stopped doing it when I realised all I was doing was personally spamming people with leaflets of products I wouldn't use.

10. Again I say they've come from nowhere.
A commercial enterprise whose seen a niche market and is capitolising on it.

11. www.bid4bees.co.uk is the place to anomonously sell stolen Beekeeping equiptment.

12. Online Auctions are out to make money not provide a service & they regulate themselves.

13. In the small print on many of Credit & Debit cards re-issued in the last 12months the Banks have hidden away a small sentence stating "The cardholder is responsible for any Web Card transactions until you report your card as stolen. & Any & All card transactions on the web are the responsibility of the CardHolder."
I suppose the Banks have had enough of paying out for web ID thefts.

I called my Bank & they verbally denied the statement existed.
Like you, I already know a verbal promise is worth the paper it's written on.
So, I took the small print into my branch & showed it to them -they said "it must be new conditionof the bank."

Like everyone, we all fall for a friendly smiling face. Then handing us a prity a card telling us "the website is specially for you" is easy for these personal spammers.
I used to do leafleting & I'm a member of Ebay through leafleting by a smiling face outside a computer conference years ago yet I've never tried to sell anything!
