If the swarm went as long as this load of tripe you would never find it. It is bound to be putting some keen beekeepers off the forum, not every one is here for a row or to wind people up, someone put an end to this load off Buuu ll shsh.:sos:

Prime swarm is headed by a mated laying queen irrespective of the size of the swarm, (it is usually larger than a cast as it generally leaves the hive first)

Lindauer when he was studying his prime swarms commented that he sometimes found a few virgins in the prime swarm alongside the mated queen.
He found them when he was moving the queen into a cage onto a flat surface to observe the scout bee dances. Sometimes the rest of the swarm wouldn't follow the original queen, and when he "delved" into the swarm he found a few virgins present which were holding the swarm in it's original position. Moved them into the cage and the swarm followed.
Note, this does not in any way contradict the original definition of a prime swarm having a mated queen, just a few tag along virgins in some (not all) cases.
Perhaps the original swarms departure was delayed due to weather and virgins had emerged before the swarm went off and went along, but Lindauer never mentioned this, it was an aside in his review paper.

It makes a great point though. There are very few absolutes in Beekeeping (or elsewhere). It's a braver/foolhardier man than me who stands up and says" its this way, no other way. Now shut up because I say so". Apart from the lousy debating technique, he's liable to find he's more often than not, wrong.
I've seen half a dozen different definitions given in this thread, some of them defined by mating status and size , one defined by order to leave the hive and size.
Is the oldest rule in Beekeeping not " Ask a hundred beeks the same question and get 99 different correct answers and 400 new questions" ?

Much easier and less aggro if we all agree the definition IN THIS FORUM is that a prime swarm is headed by a mated Queen. What you call it elsewhere is up to you :)

I totally agree, and hopefully this will now stop the bickering.

To be fair, none of this rubbish was about a misunderstanding caused by misuse of terminology, it was about beating to death the person that misused it.
The agro purely a consequence of the unnecessary delivery by some.
I'm astounded at the arrogance though that for "ease of use" you want to remove all reference to swarm size from every definition in probably every book written. Perhaps you should publish, I'd love to hear why were doing that. Since size is no longer relevant, is an absconding queen now a prime swarm ?

Please, just shut up. An absconding colony is not a swarm, prime or otherwise. Next you will be trying to include what? Walk away splits?

Not so .. I think that you will find that there are a large number of threads where JBG was actually offered good advice from many people on here ..

Unfortunately, his aggressive and argumentative attitude and indiscriminate rudeness at times (almost from the moment he joined) has earned him a reputation which does not endear him to people who, on the whole, are helpful and friendly.

This is not a forum which bans people for no good reason .. JBG has earned himself two bans in relatively quick succession and was warned he was nearing the limit of the mods tolerance on both occasions.

The problem was exacerbated not by JBG's insistence that he was right and virtually everyone else was wrong but by his rudeness to those who sought to correct him.

If you have been around this forum for as long as your membership indicates then you must have viewed the plethora of threads stated by JBG .. if not, perhaps waste some of your time looking back through them ..

The moderation on this site is way too lax. This guy is an obvious troll. He is obviously the same user as JonnyBeeGone. To turn such a simple topic as prime/cast swarms into a near twenty page trolling is ridiculous. Why Stucat/JonnyBeeGone has not been snuffed already I do not know. I understand it must be difficult and time consuming to be a moderator but if the forum is to survive the moderation needs to be stricter. Perhaps enrol some more moderators because the forum is fast becoming a joke with these prats being allowed free rein to wind everyone up and silly unnecessary beginners sections. So many intelligent voices have been lost already.
