Are they bumble bees as in the photo then ?

Seems a bit random to me - if they are not flying from a colony and just bees randomly set free I can't really see what the study is going to tell us ....

Bit like letting a whole load of balloons free and seeing where they land ..

About as much use as the Friends of the Earth Bee Count ... Perhaps there's more to it.
 
It says its only to do with where pollinators preferred feeding areas are in London and makes no mention of restricting it to honey bees.

Mind you I kind of agree in that a few dozen students with clipboards could do the same thing.
