Sorry, guys.

I'm notoriously grouchy, but I can't get fired up about this one.

Hozelock are indeed cr*p - but I choose to use them because they appear, attached to things I buy. They're cheap, poorly made but sort of do the job and are easily changed when they get too irritating.

There's no one to blame but me for living with them.
If I cared enough, proper brass fittings are not that expensive and last a lifetime.

There are far too many more important things to worry about - like whether to use matchsticks or cocktail sticks to ventilate my hives.

Dusty.

:iagree: And I wish I hadn't posted this in the first place. I'd just got back in from watering some newly planted bee friendly plants. Watered to settle the soil around the roots .

Are we not allowed to post about inconsequential things?
Perhaps there should be a sub section within off-topic chat. "Inconsequential" or "Boring"

try using 'geka' fittings, no more leaks. its what is used in commercial horticulture

Hey, Sixfooter!

Glad you posted it!

You've given an old grouch the chance to grouch about not being grouchy about this subject!

It's a perfect post.

Dusty.

It's not the connection between the hose and the fitting, but the connections between hozelock devices. Tap to hose reel, hose reel to hose, end of hose to lance or pistol type thing. I'm talking about male hoselock fittings plugged into female hizelock fittings. Leaked since new, so its not the bleedin' O rings. It's not me. Not my fault, the stuff is crap!
Supercilious old farts!

How many have you used? Why didn't you replace them?
If it leaked from the beginning, it clearly wasn't up to scratch, Should have gone back. I have used Hozelock in the past and it has functioned satisfactorily. May get a bit leaky with age, but wear in the fittings or perished O rings as stated.

I think this debate has opened some deep philosophical questions regarding quality, acceptance of shoddy second rate products and aspiration for perfection. These questions can be applied not just to seemingly trivial hose fittings but to almost any aspect of life...
It is important - not inconsequential!

I have to agree- and that is speaking as someone who works in a garden centre that sells the stuff, and as a supercilious fart myself!

try these, tip use petroleum jelly on all rubber "o" rings and washers

It perishes rubber..

For high pressure seals offshore specialist greases were used and what a difference they made.

One problem is that the couplings need to be clean. Get some earth in there and it'll be hard to couple ... and it'll leak.

Just finished hosing down the garden path with 15 year old Hoselock gear. Having bought almost every type of Hoselock gadget, over the past 20 years, the only thing to ever let me down was the Timer, but I have my suspicions that a certain person interfered with it. The Timer was linked to the hanging basket kit. Very good kit. Used in pubs I think. Left for people in previous house. Hoselock is a great advance on the jubilea clip, for sure.

Quite, which is why you shouldn't use petroleum jelly with condoms.

Now there would be trouble if Hozelock made condoms!
