Hello everyone on my last inspection of the new hive i decided to take several picture's for you experienced folk to look over and offer constructive advice..

The Hive was set in place around 2 wk's ago with 5 frames of brood in all stages also pollen and honey present... 2wk's on there is now 7 frames full of brood and food with one of the new frames being drawn with come and filled with brood and egg's..

My only concern's are

(1) will a hive this small produce enough food for the winter supplies..

(2) What is the Funny shaped cell in the last picture.. to me it look's like a badly made drone cell and i hope i'm right..

Any way picture overload here we come.. lol

I think I would remove it if I wasnt sure. The Queen looks safe and is laying eggs.

I would say - play cup

Have a look underneath it. Is it sealed? Or open? If open is there an egg or milk in it? As above may just be a play cup

looks like a play cup to me too, wouldn't worry

@Millet: that's a beautiful colony. I particularly like the way they have drawn that new comb. I wouldn't worry about winter just yet and you can always feed them. Are they in a wood or a poly brood box?

ADD Did you split the brood nest with foundation to get it drawn? Others might disapprove... ENDADD

Thank you Load's for that. ;-) i have reasearched many times but that playcup look's different to what i have seen..it makes my memory think it's a bad drone cell for some reason.. ie a drawn out bit of come over a uneven surface..

Hi Steve, everything's looking good. Is there 7 frames of brood? In another 10 days or so there will be a population explosion, so you need to think about giving them some more space. Any problems give me a bell.

The queen could do with remarking whilst you can see her.

They are in a National Hive wood brood box with super ontop which is untouched.. obviously.. lol

I did split the brood and food with new foundation after 3 day's.. after a quick conversation with the good fellow i purchased them from.. and i have since done similar by putting a new frame with foundation between new brood and food.. it's hard to explain on a key board but basically a new frame of foundation has been set to encourage bee's to walk over it to get to more important thing's and in doing so the odd bee might think (i) like this empty space and start work on it..??.

Sounds like a reasonable strategy to get the brood comb drawn but take the super off. It will draw heat and creates the risk of '"chimneying". As per Hawklord, any soace should be added sideways at first.

ADD. Beats an insect hotel; I get it :- ) ENDADD

Sorry C i mist this post.. and thank you again.. if you get short of bunnies i have land you can fly the bird's on now and again..

Anyway back to the bee's.. i love them and i'm still like a kid with a new toy i have all ready got a list of wild flower's to plant for the next season that the bee's love and they are nowhere near as angry as they where to me the other day when i had no veil on.. my ear still has a lump in it.. haha ..

On marking the Queen i'm pretty confident on spotting her for now but i will mark her again if the need arises.. i would have phoned you the other day about that funny cell But i don't want to be a nuisance..
They is 7 frames of brood and food but they are not full but i would say 2/3rd's on average

Thank you very much again..
Cheer's Steve.
