I think the journalist was attempting a humorous slant on the "Flight of the bumble bee"

I think an empty hive is as sad as an empty swimming pool.....
What do you think?
 
totally agree with you on that.

I don't like the adopt a hive part at the end. who actually gets the hives that have been adopted thro BBKA or is it a real con by them.

Their scheme is nothing whatsoever to do withthe BBKA. Is a private scheme run by the business concerned.
 
Humble-bee is just another name for Bombus. Darwin used the term in 'Origins' and the two were both used till the 1940's, so some youngsters might not know the term;)

Reporters don't generally write the headlines (except for the smallest local papers). It's a sub-editor's job at a national newspaper; puns trump factual accuracy every time.
