I managed to raise £34 for the bees this afternoon, and £15 for the Gardening Club. Although not a fortune, I know, it is a lot more than I thought I would get. So, feeling pretty good at the moment. Maybe this will give the others a boot in the right direction......wishful thinking probably, but I'm doing what I can at least.

I thought I would share the news with you all, as you have been so supportive. Thank you all.

That's great, no wonder you're pleased. Maybe you have got a bit of support there! What's your first priority buy?;)

Jars, so I can sell some honey and make more money :D

Little entrepreneur, aren't I?

Kaz, have you tried getting in touch with local businesses to ask for some sponsorship?
Some of the bigger companies, like tesco, have community grant funds for local projects. The grant application process is generally quite simple and could get you a fair amount of money to purchase new kit etc.
Kids, education, community, bees - got to be a winner on any local grant application I reckon.

I'll give it a go, but the money wasn't my department. I will suggest it when we meet. I did kind of suggest things like this at the last meeting, but everyone was more interested in going home. The person in charge of the money has got in touch and made a move to arrange extraction. I think another member of staff must have got on the case as my emails weren't taken notice of.

I think they know I'll find a way, and rely on that, regardless of how stressful it is or how much of a struggle. If things don't change I'm going to start talking about giving up on the project ( I wouldn't, but no one else knows the first thing about beekeeping so if they thought they'd lose their "bee expert" maybe they'll shift )

Anyway. I've made a good start. Enough to cover jars I think.....I hope! I haven't looked at the prices yet. Frames and foundation prices were enough of a shock!

well done - B and Q have a commitment to support local worthwhile causes, could be worth a visit :)

not anymore they dont they have stopped giving out their grants for £250. they will only now give out stuff on a first come first surved basis on damaged any unsalable stock. wat a load of rubbish!! in more ways than one lol

Buckets. You need some honey buckets/tubs, extract and store in these and get prices for your jars. One of the 30lb buckets will usually take a super's worth. Far easier to store this way and incentive to develop some interest with jarring it.

I have a few builders buckets, brand new, never been used for anything. I intended to use them for planting tomatoes. Would they be adequate?

We have been given the use of a nearbyish associations extracting room, but we have to wait. How long does the process take? I imagine I wouldn't be going in the morning and coming out in the afternoon with my jars full, would I? lol

Kazz I hope your not serious about the builders buckets. Any food has to be stored in food safe containers. There are lots of rules and regs if you are selling honey some of them apply even if you give it away

I was serious haha, I still have much to learn it seems

The association will have all this stuff though won't they?

Jeez beekeeping is an expensive past time. Everywhere I turn it's more expense!

I'm a community councillor and our council has a fund to help local community enterprises - if you have a community council where you are (not everyone does)write to the clerk of the council asking for a bit of financial help - you may be surprised

Thank you. Who would I contact to find out?

Hi, find your local sandwich shop and ask for the containers that they get there butter/salad cream in, these are food safe and have a well fitting lid. That's how I got mine or you can pay through the nose to the biggest bee hive seller in the country.

Steven

The board of governors should know as usually a community council will have a repreentative on it otherwise contact your County/borough council they may be able to help.

Another good source for large food grade buckets is a bakery. Also large sandwich/deli shops as they get stuff like Mayonnaise in 15 or 30 lb tubs.

re jars - unless local association can help the problem is the P&P from the majors unless you buy 4 gross - your money would buy 144 from CWJ or similar before shipping. Ebay it'll get you 72 inc P&P.

BUT....did you watch the apprentice this week?

BTW if the used food buckets you get from bakery/deli haven't been washed out they may be handy props for the charity calendar!!!!
