Just had a chat with my bees about this. They told me to beware of these โ€œelitesโ€ as theyโ€™re trying to take over everything. They reckon they could even be trans bees with implants from some neural company thingy.
Anyway they were miffed I suggested this โ€œupgradeโ€ as theyโ€™ve been looking after their local queens all Winter, stuck inside these boxes in the pouring rain and they are doing more than fine, now Spring is almost here.
They said Iโ€™ll be delighted with the amount of brood when I rip their home apart in April and they promised to be on their best behaviour when I doโ€ฆ..

To be fair to you, that's an awesome reply! LOL

Do they have a bmh cape or a side kick?
Why would they be an upgrade from my locally adapted native bees that didnโ€™t get fed in the autumn and wonโ€™t need feeding early spring?

Thanks for saying so๐Ÿค—
I started with Buckfast from Peter Little and they were lovely bees. Iโ€™m sure yours are too. Now mine have become local mongrels, but they, (the bees), reckon diversity is their strength.๐Ÿคช
Should I need to re queen because of bad attitude, (I have only experienced one really bad lot so far), I would certainly contact you. I wish you well๐Ÿ‘

Well this is a very lovely interchange. Thank you!

Peter Little was a fantastic man.

I remember calling him up to discuss a Pure Buckfast queen I had on order and he wasn't very well at all, but still made time to do what he loved best - chat about bees and beekeeping. He is sorely missed within the beekeeping community! His bees were brilliant.

All the best of luck for the season.

To redress the balance.
I have one of Laurenceโ€™s queens. Last week I managed to find a quick window in this awful weather to move them from their nuc to a full size box. Just as well. Three and a half frames of brood no space. Really pleased.
This is a sales page. If youโ€™re not interested in Buckies whatโ€s the point in having a poke. Nobody is having a go at BS who are also advertising queens.

I'll agree, had a few of Laurence the past couple of years and they have all been absolute beasts. No doubt I'll be ordering a couple more for some early season splits next week.
Thanks Damo. Glad they are doing well for you :)

Are they your own over wintered queens reared in North wales or have you imported them? Or maybe you have managed to rear some early queens in N. Wales but I doubt it given the awful weather.

These ones are imported from Melita Bees in Malta ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น

We have our first UK mated queens available around the first week of June

I had a couple of Queenโ€™s from Laurence last year and they did brilliantly well. I have 3 yellow Queenโ€™s which I will replace this year with BMH Queenโ€™s. However, itโ€™s still a while away for me to be thinking about inspecting never mind making splits, here in the north of Cumbria. We are struggling to even make double figures temperature wise ๐Ÿฅถ.

I have bought 2 of you queens. The red one is absolutely prolific, loads of honey and gentle bees.
This year I started nuc with a green Q to unite with a Q- split. Again she was prolific and soon I had to move them into more space. So I attempted the unification only to discover shredded paper no Q and QCs on her brood.
this colony is still q-
I went in yesterday and there was one QC open and one that the bees were attending avidly

Is it too late for them to rear their own Q?
I cut slits in the news paper but I wonโ€™t do this again.
Was it because I created too many large slits.

Thanks Dani :)
An update for you Laurence,
Well, as things turned out I did decide to add one of your queens to a split, rather than let them rear their own - to avoid a gap in proceedings and to add different genetics to the mix.
It was one from Malta, which on receipt looked quite small (as I know they can be) but active and well attended.
She was accepted, plumped up quickly and has laid really well through the Summer and the temperament of the colony is really good.
Theyโ€™ve foraged well and produced a good amount of honey and are currently vigorously defending their nest from wasps.

So, all good๐Ÿ‘ Thank you.

That's great to hear. It's quite amazing how they plump up within a week or two and get going.

I am really glad she has settled in well, is behaving and had helped product a decent honey crop.

Also great to hear they are defending against wasps. People often comment the calm colonies cant defend against wasps, but I find they are some of the very best when it comes to colony defence :)

Glad the queens are doing well but sorry to the hear unification didn't go to plan. It can be a tricky manipulation. I like to cage the queens when merging and then release after a few days (sorry - I know the horse has bolted on this one).

It's a bit late but not impossible. Not many queens available now so worth giving them a chance if she has already emerged. Next week looks like 20c which as long as there are some drones around should give her an opportunity
