Remove some sealed brood before they get this large or put them in a larger box, cramping them until they're building slabs of brood in the feeder is misguided IMHO

Some swarms mate choose to build comb in here before drawing out fresh frames. Nothing to do with over cramping. I've had the feeder filled with comb within a week

Yes, sorry. Thinking about it I've had a small cast swarm start the job in there.

Theeggman is quite right. Using a piece of 4mm ply the same size as the clear plastic cover that comes with the nuc a 4pt rapid feeder fits perfectly inside an eke. Drill a 32mm hole in the correct place one you've marked the ply. The lip of the eke still covers the top of the nuc and prevents rain etc getting in. The clear plastic fits under the roof and you just need to remove the roof to see what's going on without bees getting into the eke or disturbing the bees.

If you are using the Paynes Eke, there is no need to make a new ply crown board for these Nucs to allow you to use a rapid feeder.

Drill a feed hole in the clear crown board that comes with the nuc. Use an old pencil (or two) or a piece of a frame bottom bar laid across the frames of the nuc as a spacer to hold the crown board up off the frames when you set the filled feeder on top. The round, 4pt rapid feeder fits nicely inside the eke.
