I have always liked David Attenborough, I just hope what story he tells is backed up with scientific evidence

God created DNA. The most powerful material on planet earth. Humans can only copy what is already there. Evolution is a product of DNA. The tree of life with its many branches - the ability to adapt and survive - the survival of the fittest genes. The 'seven' days many think are simply a metaphor - not a literal interpretation.

Yip. Keep those straws clutched tightly.
Religion is a product of ignorance plain and simple.

I don't think so.

Religion (any form of worship to a non-real 'being'). I think it is a way of making death more acceptable - happy hunting ground, heaven, re-incarnation, etc. Doesn't really matter which 'god' is trusted to provide after death. Since that perception, seems to prevail throughout religions, that is my view of the subject, although it would appear to be an excuse for a war at any suitable opportunity (don't just think about current 'holy' wars but of those that occurred hundreds of years ago -the crusades per eg).

I feel religion is out dated and with the vast knowledge we have on workings of life and the universe I feel it has no place in the world and still exists either through lack of education, fear or indoctrination. I realise there are many positives, but those positives exist through people of good moral attitude and would continue to exist without religion.

One of a multitude of negative effects of religion and indoctrination that simple shouldn't be happening in 2012 (contains bad language)-

There hasn't been much talk in this thread about evolution & religion of the evolutionary advantage that religion has given us as a species.

Every society that has existed has had religion as part of it's make up, neuroscientists are beginning to understand that it is hard wired into the brain.

To call it pure and simple ignorance is rather foolish in itself.

The need to belong to a social group as a teenager is hard wired. Like goths etc. Security, Safety in numbers, get on the mating ladder I expect. People tend to grow up though. Unfortunately some don't, they just can't give it up. That is why you still see 30 odd year olds walking around like something out of Rocky Horror. Rather sad I think.

At no point did I say that I believed it all, I'm not sure about it. However your glib, sweeping statement isn't particularly inciteful or true.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, but the religious people that I know are good people that wish to make things better in the world through thought and deed. You do them a disservice.

At no point did I say you did:) I am sure they are very nice people. I've met nice people too, religious and not. I'm not sure why I could have done them a disservice. Did I I write 'all religious people are rubbish!'?. You don't need religion to be a good person. Good morals and decent parenting is all that is needed

:iagree:

Religion is a product of ignorance plain and simple.

In fact I'd go so far as to say downright offensive.

I've thought long and hard about my faith (as well as my religion) and my studies etc throughout my life prove with no uncertainty that it's not based on ignorance and certainly not (as RAB implied) a way to make 'death more acceptable'

Without being offensive - I pity those who have no faith :D

I have faith in many things.

Very true but your ideas of right and wrong stem from your upbringing and feed back from neighbours and friends ,largely brought up amid a religious norm!
My take on this ,all the main religions are political in that they. Provide a user manual in an attempt to have people live in harmony and how to behave to promote that end, this makes religions. ,in the main valid!
The concept of God as an entity is my belief , religions claiming their holy books to be the literal word of God is a belief too far for me.

True. I guess the term religion is banded around too much without specific meaning. I'm mainly talking about 'god' and 'santa claus'

One thing is sure - we are going to die one day and find out the truth or...........eternal oblivion.
One life dude...live it!

And posting sentiments like that on a bb full of people of many persuasions is a sign of ignorance and simplicity : giving offence where it is not needed and ruining the case you try to make.

Epic fail I think.

:puke: Excuse me while I go and worship that strange being growing out of the block of cheese in the fridge. I couldn't possible know how to live without it.

We have believers and non believers. Non believers refuting the idea of God, using science to back up their ideas. But even in science there are unanswered questions dating back to the time of Einstein. We live in a three dimensional world and theories of predicted dimensions of between 10 and 26. Some of these dimensions at the sub atomic level. But it will be difficult to see anything in these other dimensions. So until these dimensions are discovered and explored and dispel completely the idea of God I shall continue to have an open mind. But then a new theory will come along and then we are further away from finding any answers.
