When in doubt with conflicting advice I usually follow the experienced serious beekeepers. They are the ones who usually know what they are talking about based on practical hands on experience. Too much theoretical beekeeping practised on forums these days

I have the greatest respect for Mike Palmer, I've heard him speak on the sustainable apiary - brilliant - I've watched his videos, including the one on keeping bees in the frozen north and in no way am I suggesting that opening bees when temperatures are low is not possible.

Merely, and sadly you don't seem to be grasping what I (and ohers) have said there needs to be a tangible objective and in the circumstances that Monarda finds himself in .. there is no real need that cannot wait.

And .. if you have a 'few' bees that have DWV there may be more and a dead queen that may be exhibiting CBPV I certainly would not be risking putting that colony any where nearer another colony than they already are.

I certainly agree that seeking out the best advice before a course of action is taken is a good idea ... but I've also seen some really bad advice coming from experienced and practical hands on beekeepers ... .[/I] "
