Dump the porter bee escapes ... they are an abomination. The Rhombus works much quicker, never jams up and (in my case anyway) nearly always removes every last bee from the super. Put on in the evening .. clear by morning.

I agree, I'm getting a bit sick.. On more than one occasion this season I've transferred nucs into hives and low and behold they have porter bee escapes in the crownboard.
Why would a shop sell a single crown board for a hive when you need two one solid and one for clearing/ feeding.

Tradition!! the multi purpose crown board with the two Porter escape holes was designed during wartime austerity and has never been changed. In fact, looking at what's happened the last few years, some people are still living in that bubble.

To be honest I quite agree with u when it comes to the design of the hives and equipment. Old habits die hard. Roofs with the redundant vent is one..

Anothet example is I kept wondering why is the varroa tray in a standard hive floor always only rear access, why not front access which will make clearing much easier with my instance, one of my hive is against a wall.

I then started modifying floors and subsequently making them front access, just need to ensure there is no gap between the tray and the slot where tray slots in, otherwise bees will mistaken the gap for an entrance and will then congregate under the floor's mesh, and subsequently start building comb under the mesh.

I recently even made a floor that have side access varroa tray (see photo) as one of my hives in 2nd apiary faces a shrub bush, and rear there is an obstruction so only available place to have pull out tray is via the side.

Had started making extra roofs without vent slots too. [emoji6]
