Hi Davnig
I agree, and that is why we joined, but we also try to put in as well as take out. Most others are the same but I can understand why a branch would be reluctant to accept members who are reluctant to make a contribution.

Sadly there are always those who take more than they offer and there are always those who give more than they take. If it doesn't balance out then the assoc/club etc will just die out.

I would see the membership fee as the contribution.

. But with all the certificate collectors, course management officers appearing in some BKA's, I really wonder how long it will be before you have to have certification before you can even keep bees. Some what along the line of a shotgun cert with 'photo to purchase cartridges.

If this happens a lot of us would be well and truly stuffed. I have nigh on 20 years experience but not a certificate to my name. I would like to think I know what I am doing by this point and have no need of a formal qualification.

I think it's fair to say most beekeepers ought to be certified.

next thing licensed, defra/fera, fees, regulations, red tape - just to have a hive at the bottom of the garden

Imagine the fuss when a whole load of empty WBCs spring up and are reported and the Inspectorate have to visit each house...

So it is here - every year, to register: beekeeper, number of hives, apiary, etc etc. It's no big deal. Keeps someone in a job.

(France) Not sure how it keeps anyone in a job when it is the beekeeper that does all the work himself, he registers and declares his hives on the internet and any income on the internet to the tax people (if you have more than 9 hives). Its all pretty much automatic for us little hobbyists.

North Tipperary BKA is open to all, with no obligation to do the beginners' course or hold any certification before joining. As part of our last beginners' course we held a free introductory lecture before taking course fees to continue.
