When the plastic excluders come off at the end of the season they are all placed in a large plastic tank filled with washing soda solution ( Finnie's lye) and left to soak all winter long.

Then jet washed ( place in an old bakery wire tray ) and then given a 20 minute soak in fresh 5% red label dairy bleach... rinsed off and dried... ready for another season.

We do not use excluders on the Rose hives......

Queen excluders

Would it matter if the were just brushed and not washed? I don't think I have ever cleaned them.

just remember that as well as removing wax and propolis, this kind of tool will also remove the galv off the wires if used vigorously, you will find your QX's rusting sooner rather than later.
I tend to use a paint scraper and a hive cleaning tool to get the worse off if they are heavily covered in brace comb then a quick pass with my flame gun (it's a wee bit more powerful than a standard blowlamp) gets the rest off without heating the wires sufficiently for them to distort.
