Final check list, all materials getting ordered Thursday. This is material list for 3 national hives with 4 super boxes plus kit

Red or white deal rough timber
9x3/4. 24ft for brood box
5 1/2x3/4. 24ft for supers. Maybe 6x3/4 if timber doesn't come in 5x1/2
2x1. 24ft for hand rails
4x3/4. 24ft for roof
1x3/4. 32ft for crown board
1x1. 8ft
8x4 of 6mm exterior ply for crown board/roof/V screen

30 or 33 brood frames with foundation
100 super frames with foundation
bee starter kit including hive tool, smoker, gloves, scraper and bee suit
3 kids bee suits
 
Why the rough timber, OK if you plan on plaining it but then you loose the thickness and redwood is a longer lasting wood than white and less prone to the weather conditions, or am I trying to tell a shipwright how to suck eggs ;)

I Like a challenge lol. All jokes aside thou, the hives will have rabbet joints and sure they are only hives I'm making, not much to them IMO. The rough is cheaper. They will also be getting painted so no real need for plained I was thinking. I was even thinkiby of just buying the planed but just seen a few pics on the net with rough looking hives and they looked likey they doing ok

I just thought water will run off a smooth surface quicker than a rough one, I can't see it being a problem on the inside though. Don't forget to post pictures

rough may even be an advantage on the inside as the bees will propolise it more than a planed surface thus giving more protection to the colony
